Hey, y’all. Here I am at the last weekly column for 2009. I’ve enjoyed ‘chatting’ with you every week and sincerely hope that I’ve been of service in helping you enjoy the fantastic social life of Ocean City.
Can you believe it’s Halloween weekend?! I’ve already had a sampling of costume mania from Pickles Tuesday night (they’re doing it again Sat.) and I can’t wait to see the gang at Seacrets Locals’ Halloween bash tonight (Thur.). Frenchie (Dispatch) and I will be checkin’ out all the costumes Sat. night for Seacrets where the grand prize is a trip for two to Jamaica and great music is supplied by Johnny Drama opening for Kristen and The Noise. It’s always the craziest scene in town. But there’re many other options if you’re not into the huge crowds.
Marco filled us in on many of the Halloween happenings in Sonic Notes so I’ll touch on a few others such as The Steer Inn Tavern on Rt. 589. They have opted to hold their costume contest on Friday so we’ll get to hear and see Full Circle in costume. Guitarist Kathy Denk is a fabulous artist (she’s done some of our covers and does the KISS face makeup for Rock Bottom) so she’s sure to come up with something wild for the band. Speaking of Rock Bottom, they will perform Sat. night at the Purple Moose. But I digress.
In addition to the traditional costume party on Fri., the Steer Inn will offer up something different - not for the squeamish. Live evil rock & roll “to wake up the dead” will be performed by the Philly area’s The Dead End Cruisers with special guest Werevildares. Skip says to dress in the spirit of the Dead. And also, classic horror and monster footage combined with animated flames, bats, ghosts & witches will be flying across the big screen all weekend. Sounds like freakish fun!
Donnie Berkey will host the annual Halloween costume contest at Whiskers in the Pines Plaza offering cash prizes. It should be funny watching folks sing their favorite karaoke tunes while in costume. Then you can head back on Sat. for great music from Woodstok Nation.
Another Karaoke haunt is 707 Sports Bar & Grill hosted by Mick. Again, it will be loads of fun watching ghouls and goblins entertaining the crowd. Here’s a good place for great music on Fri. night, as well, with Tommy Edward & Melissa Rose. This is one kick-a trio with Harry on drums. They were so impressive at Seacrets performing the Sir Rod show. Harry plays one  of the best drum solos I’ve ever seen, bar none. Anyway, hear ‘em Fri. or Sat. night at BJ’s.
It’s tons of fun to go to BJ’s for their Happy Hour Halloween party on Fri. with Teenage Rust &The Fabulous Rustettes starting early at 5pm. Billy looks faaaabulous in his Frankenstein head and the staff always gets into the spirit, too. No need to run around as another band begins at 9pm - The Mood Swingers featuring Lauren Glick. This group is most definitely a crowd pleaser.
Galaxy 66 is hosting a Halloween Jazz party on Fri. with music by The Philly George Project. These guys are sensational - it’s gonna kill me that I can’t be everywhere ‘cause I love this band. This is also a Pink Ribbon Cancer benefit so you can have fun and do some good too.
Marco mentioned the Ocean Club in the Clarion but I have to also reiterate that this is one of the best costume parties in town with big cash prizes for the winners and music by First Class Sat. night.
I certainly enjoyed music from Poole and the Gang last Fri. at Fager’s Island. What a talented bunch of guys. And even more impressive when you think that they don’t play together all the time - they’re in different groups. This weekend brings Dead Poets on Fri. and Animal House for their big, big Halloween Party on Sat. night. Big prizes are awarded here and the staff always gets into it big time. I bet the band will be dressed crazy too. And don’t forget Tues. Claim to Fame.
Since I’m not going to be around to tell you about it next week, I must mention that there’s an event happening on Sun., Nov. 8 at the Globe in downtown Berlin that will be well worth your while to see. Wes Davis will host the first in a series of winter concerts dubbed O.C. Originals “No Cover and No Covers!” The featured artists will be Nancy Micciulla, Randy Lee Ashcraft and Kevin Poole, all very talented singer/songwriters. The artists will share the stage, performing and talking about their compositions, inspirations and the craft of songwriting. This should be a very interesting and entertaining evening beginning at 6pm.
Sammy Barnes dropped by the office the other day to tell me about a new production by the Community Players of Salisbury called “All Shook Up.” This is a musical comedy (right up my alley) with this tag: “The story is all new, the hits are all ELVIS!” Performances are set for Nov. 6 & 7 (8pm) and Nov. 8 (2pm).
Welcome to new players Davey Jones Locker Room on the Boards. They began live entertainment tonight (Thur.) with Smooth & Remy and will feature the incomparable Chris Button Fri. night. Check out their restaurant review on page 7 to learn about all their great food and lots of fun things to do, too. Maybe you’ve read the Bahopping article by Eric.
I’m sad to say goodbye for a few weeks; but look for us again on Nov. 20 for the first of our two holiday issues. Now, get out there and party, my friends, but always remember to party safe!
