Former Rolling Stones drummer, Brian Jones, is back in the news as his ‘death by misadventure’ case has been reopened.
    Boy Howdy Music Fans!
Welcome September! It’s always good for the soul to see some friends out and about during this (hopefully brief) weather. Even though we all know it’s coming year after year the decrease of traffic and bodies in this city is always a bit eerie by comparison. 2nd season here we come!
An interesting tidbit from the British Press tells us that the mysterious death of Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones is emerging from a cold case file. New info has come  to light and Scotland Yard is reopening the case. Jones’ demise was ruled death by misadventure after he was found dead in his swimming pool. Sedatives were found in his system even though witnesses said he was coherent just previously. The obvious culprits of any foul play were all dismissed at the time because of lack of any obvious motive. The Stones had already moved on to replace Jones two years earlier. He could not have toured America that year because of a pending drug charge, therefore inhibiting any chances at a visa. Mick and Keith were writing all the songs and driving the Stones toward success. Nothing to gain. Another apparent suspect was Brian Jones’ groundkeeper, reportedly a loathesome dodgey Cato Kalin type. Again, no motive; why kill the golden goose? Keith Richards is quoted as saying, “I honestly never met anyone who truly liked Brian.” When asked about Jones’ death, Keith could only offer “no one will ever know” and “Brian was not a likeable guy.” Repeated reports of physical abuse at the hands of Brian Jones toward his female partners were common. Even though things were rarely if ever reported in those days and wasn’t called abuse, motive could lie at the feet of any of those females. Speculation could point a finger to plenty of other hangers on that had a beef with Brian Jones.
A possible murder case over 40 years old is news unto itself. The third murder trial in the assassination of civil rights leader Medger Evers comes to mind. Murdered in 1963, Evers’ assailant was brought to justice over 30 years later after two acquittals, citing two hung juries. The jury found Byron Delar Beckweth guilty and sentenced him to life. A very cold case indeed!
We’ll have to wait and see what happens in the ongoing investigation.
