Kicking off Jammin' for a Cure at 5pm at Seacrets - Chris English.
Boy Howdy Music Heads! Greetings Earthlings! We’ve got a special event in Midtown tonight to satisfy all of your humanoid senses. The folks at Seacrets, Jamaica USA on 49th and the Bay were kind enough to supply the Morley Hall this evening (10/9) for this philanthropic endeavor. The event is ‘Jammin’ for a Cure’ organized by the Pink Ribbon Committee of our local chapter of The American Cancer Society. October being Breast Cancer month, the focus of the proceeds help fund research, education of prevention and general awareness of this all too common disease. Much of the atmosphere is a celebration of life for survivors who managed to fight and kick cancer’s ass! Most of us know someone who’s been affected by breasst cancer, be it a friend or a family member. In my case it’s my Mother, JoAnne, diagnosed six years ago and still with us. She’s doing great, taking yoga and just celebrated her 70th birthday! Thanks to fundraisers like this, she’ll likely enjoy many more birthdays. If this subject seems personal, it’s purely because it is!
Aboout the event itself. The A.C.S. volunters have been busting their humps all about town to solicit sponsors and donations to ensure the party patrons have a whale of a time. They perform a difficult and mostly thankless job for which they deserve commendation. The sacrifice of their hours, and the time away from home lives are only the tip of the iceburg.
At 5pm, local songster Chris English takes the Seacrets stage. Mr. English specializes in Delta Blues slide guitar and loves to pay homage to his heroes. He is utmost an expert in this area, keeping that important slice of Americana alive! Next up, our own Pompous Pie will que up. We’re pulling out all the stops and bringing in the kitchen sink: Tom Lutz on drums, Doug Sommers on horns and keyboard, Joey Saah on guitar, Richard Collins on bass and myself on guitar and harmonica. We’re hoping to have some other guest players as well. Pompous Pie knows how to get the party rollin’!
Our headliners for the evening are our friends Fuzzbox Piranha. These guys rock! Guitar driven tunes with a southern flair. It will be great to share the stage with Fuzzbox for we’d see a ton more of them if not for working so much ourselves!
Countless area restaurants (including Seacrets) have donated their time and talents to the gourmet buffet. That part is always a popular highlight at this party. The Chinese auction items are always top shelf. They can range from sports memorabilia to rounds of golf to area restaurant gift cards to baskets of cheer and whatever else you can imagine! Door prizes and 50/50 raffles are also ever-present. To our gentlemen readers: don’t be fooled by the color ‘pink,’ this is as much a man’s pursuit as anyone’s! We must save 2nd base, save the tata’s, and as much as you probalby think about boobs, it’s time to pay up!
All of the above plus draught beer, wine and sodas are all yours for the low, low donation at the door of only $25. Very reasonable for a Friday out at Happy Hour ‘til 10pm! Thanks in advance and we hope to Sea ya at Seacrets this evening at 5pm. What a way to kick off the weekend!
Look for Pompous Pie on Sat., 10/10, down on the Talbot St. Pier at M.R. Ducks around 3:30 pm! It’s easy access from the Rt. 50 bridge, the one that still works. This is our final show at Ducks for the 2009 season, so don’t be late!
Til next week, Tah!! – Marco Ink
