Where did July and August go? Looks like the time is rapidly approaching for college students to return to school, and Ocean City’s “second season” is just around the corner. The good news is that my favorite time of year in Ocean City is the late summer and early fall. On top of that, plenty of talented bands are ready to rock your socks off, all year long.
Touring Ocean City from South Australia, the Jay Hoad Band has developed quite a local fan base in the last few months. Just a few of the diverse instruments you’ll see on their stage include dobro, ocarina, guitar, harmonica, acoustic bass, electric bass, lap steel, percussion, and didjeridoo. Do you know what each of these instruments sounds like? Find out for yourself on Friday night at Davey Jones Locker Room, and get a taste of the band’s world beat flavor. Located on the boardwalk in the heart of downtown’s Inlet, Davey Jones Locker Room is the place to be on Friday night.
Also on Friday, Full Circle is playing at BJ’s On the Water. With two powerful female vocalists, this classic and modern rock band does a perfect cover of Fleetwood Mac, among so many others. DJ Wax is slated to spin hip-hop tunes at Coconuts Beach Bar & Grill at the Castle in the Sand Hotel at 6 pm on Friday. Galaxy 66 Bar & Grille booked the Philly George Project for Friday at 7 pm. This venue’s rooftop Skye Bar is one of my favorite places in town. Joey Saah Band performs at Pickles Pub on Friday night. If you like Jimi Hendrix, you’ll love this band. Joey has been known to play the electric guitar with his teeth. Check it out! If you’re searching for the biggest party in town on Friday, go to Seacrets for another outrageous performance by Amish Outlaws.
Saturday always brings the hottest nightlife to Ocean City. This week, one of my favorite rock & bluegrass bands, The Electric Company, will rock the Steer Inn on Racetrack Road in Ocean Pines. Also on tap for Saturday is Time Police at Coconuts Beach Bar & Grill at 2 pm, and Lime Green Band at the swank Johnny’s Pizza at 9 pm. John LaMere will bring his acoustic rock to Micky Fins at the OC Fishing Center in West Ocean City at 4 pm on Saturday. Chris Button & Joe Mama will rock the Rio Grande Café & Tiki Bar on 145th Street at 5 pm on Saturday, and Johnny Bling brings its reggae/new wave/ jam band style to Seacrets at 6 pm, followed by reggae band Innasense at 9 pm.
By Sunday morning, you may need a mimosa or bloody mary to recover from the weekend bliss. Fager’s Island hosts a weekly Sunday Jazz Brunch with Everett Spells at 11 am. The food is delicious, the music is soothing, and the bayfront backdrop is amazing. New wave band The Chest Pains will follow-up with a 9:30 pm performance at Fager’s Island, and rock band The Loop is on tap for Fager’s Monday Deck Party.
Johnny Bling is the featured band on Sunday for M.R. Ducks’ duck party. Tim Cyphers returns to ladies night at Pickles on Sunday, and party band Love Seed Mama Jump will be at Seacrets Sunday night.
A few more stellar shows coming up this week are the Jay Hoad Band at 4 pm on Tuesday at Micky Fins, and Blake Haley at 4 pm on Wednesday at Micky Fins. Plus, swing/rockabilly band Garnet Hearts is scheduled to play at Pickles Pub on Thursday, August 26. Grab a partner and get ready to swing dance the night away. Have a wonderful week, everyone.
